Alex Gariépy

His residency project at the CEM is somewhat inspired by the music of progressive rock bands like Jethro Tull, while charting an elliptical musical path through compositions of melodic sophistication and irregular meter. The overall structure of the series of pieces describes a motion from the steadiness of simple harmonies towards the emerging complexity resulting from a proliferation of melody and rhythm, before returning to the initial fixity. A musical adventure that evokes the concept of the Hero’s Journey.

Exposed to music by his family from childhood, Alex Gariépy is a young guitarist largely self-taught and whose musical passion crystallized, so to speak, during his studies at the Alma College. After several years developing his hands (and the pic) by listening to Youtube videos, lifting Led Zeppelin solos and practicing with his cousin in his garage, he was then introduced to the professional music community, notably through his involvement as guitarist in the Steeve Desgagné group and his Graceband.
