Chantale Boulianne

Holder of a Masters in Arts (2000), Chantale Boulianne is a multidisciplinary artist working in several spheres of the artistic community. It is animated around the persistent objective of articulating a passage between two postures: the body as an instrument of experience of the world and the body as a medium of expression of this experience. This is how, through different techniques, she relates, exposes, challenges and causes the body to be put to the test.

At the beginning of her career, she first worked as a technician in practical work for the Interdisciplinary Baccalaureate in Arts at UQAC (1999-2005) and she became a lecturer in 2002, in the same program. At the same time, she works as a designer and illustrator for various organizations (Regard Festival on short films 2018-2019; Les Bibliothèques de Saguenay 2019; La Boîte Rouge Vif 2008 to 2017; Design and Material Culture Research Alliance 2005 to 2010; Les Éditions de Man 2011-2013;). She also developed an approach in painting and collage which led her to a few exhibitions between 2008 and 2014. In 2005, Boulianne began to get involved as a scenographer in theatrical projects. It is a disciplinary crush. This practice then took on a great deal of importance in his work, until it became his main artistic activity.

Since then, she has collaborated with more than a dozen theater companies, research groups and independent projects, the main ones being: Le Poids du Souffle 2019; the Black Turtle 2012-2018-2019; The Research Chair in Sound Dramaturgy 2010-2012-2013-2015-2016-2017; the Lyric Art Society of the Kingdom 2007-2018-2019; the Theater at Bout Portant 2018; Puzzle Theater 2017-2019; The ABC of the Dancing Body 2016; Bath Water 2014; Les Têtes Heureuses 2007-2009-2011;… These collaborations have led her to work in around thirty stage projects, including 5 interdisciplinary projects, bringing together various disciplines (theater, performance, music, installation, video, scenography, dance… ). Very motivated by the work on the stage space, she undertook in 2012 research in scenography at the Doctorate in Arts Studies and Practice at UQAM. This allows him to deepen his practice and particularly, to question the place of interdisciplinarity in his scenography. While pursuing her career as a scenographer, Chantale returned to drawing and in 2016-2017 produced a short animated film, Sur la ligne de crest, which was in the official selection at 13 international film festivals (Canada, Madagascar, Russia , United States, France, Germany, Spain, Slovenia and Switzerland). At the beginning of 2019, she finished a second film (currently in distribution) and obtained a few months later, the support of the CALQ to make a third film. Chantale Boulianne is also recognized for her knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes, which leads her to regularly advise her colleagues and help them with their projects.
